VANCOUVER, British Columbia, November 27, 2024 – waterStrider Treatment Inc. (“waterStrider”), today announced its breakthrough success to remove dissolved selenium from mine impacted water. waterStrider’s patent-pending Amprey™ electrochemical technology reduces dissolved selenium (in parts per billion or “ppb”) from 116 ppb to just 0.42 ppb. This is well below the B.C. Water Quality Guidelines discharge limit of 2.0 ppb, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency limits of 1.5 ppb (still water) and 3.1 ppb (moving water) for most surface waters in the U.S.
Testing in Q3/Q4 2024 at waterStrider’s pilot facility in Vancouver, BC confirmed that Amprey's electrochemical process effectively dissolves metal pellet anodes, facilitating selenium reduction for co-precipitation with iron. The selenium in the feed water was in the form of selenate, and our process reduced selenate to a reduced form prior to co-precipitation with iron. In addition, the solid waste by-product is readily dewaterable, small in volume and chemically stable, providing additional significant advantages over other systems.
waterStrider’s technologies are scalable to treat mine-impacted water containing dissolved selenium, offering significantly lower capital and operating costs compared to other treatment methods. Additionally, waterStrider’s process effectively removes a broad range of dissolved metals and other contaminants of concern, including nitrate and sulfate.
waterStrider is seeking to introduce our new process to mines with elevated selenium concentrations. waterStrider offers treatability testing of mine impacted water samples at our pilot facility in Vancouver, BC. We can confirm contaminant removal and provide estimates of capital and operating costs. We encourage interested mines to contact us.
“We are thrilled with our breakthrough success to remove selenium to less than 0.5 ppb. Selenium is a major and costly problem at many mines, and our breakthrough may finally provide a practical solution to mines while delivering considerable cost savings,” stated Andriyko Herchak, waterStrider CEO.
